I am trying to configure a new Cisco 1941 router to replace my existing 1841.
The 1841 had a GSM card in it, and the 1941 does as well, as a dial backup for the primary serial connection.
The original 1841 has the following configuration:
interface Cellular0/1/0
no ip address
ip nat outside
ip virtual-reassembly
encapsulation ppp
dialer in-band
dialer pool-member 1
dialer-group 1
async mode interactive
crypto map CRYPTO_MAP_Di1
The current configuration for the 1941 is:
interface Cellular0/1/0
no ip address
ip nat outside
ip virtual-reassembly
encapsulation ppp
dialer in-band
dialer pool-member 1
async mode interactive
crypto map CRYPTO_MAP_Di1
I am trying to get the 1941 to be configured exactly the same way, however, when I try to change the configuration from "encapsulation slip" to "encapsulation ppp", I get the following error:
Cellular0/1/0: Only SLIP encapsulation supported
Also, note that the original 1841 configuration has the line "dial-group 1", but I get an error on that CLI also of the following, when trying to add that line command.
%Remove Dialer Profile Configuration first
Does anyone have any idea why I cannot change the encapsulation from slip to ppp, and why I get that error trying to issue the dialer-group command?
The new GSM modem does NOT support PPP at all under the newer IOS 15.x, and in addition to that, I have to also change the chat-script to the new AT commands, because ATDT no longer works either.
What about the issue with the dialer-group 1 CLI is was having an issue with?
The solution:
I think the issue with the dialer commands is because you have some dialer config on the interface already. Try removing the following from the Cellular interface...
dialer in-band
dialer pool-member 1
...then try applying the dialer-group command again.
This solution also can be used for the Cisco 2951 router.

The Cisco Catalyst 2960 48 Power over Ethernet (PoE) switch with PoE for entry-level enterprise, midmarket, and small branch office networks, allows connectivity to Ethernet-powered devices, including Cisco IP phones, wireless access points, and video cameras.
The Cisco Catalyst 2960-48PST-Lcan support 48 PoE ports with total PoE power output capacity at 370W. Taking advantage of Cisco Catalyst Intelligent Power Management, the Cisco Catalyst 2960-48PST-L configuration can deliver the necessary power to support 24 ports at 15.4W, 48 ports at 7.7W, or any combination in between. Cisco Catalyst 2960 Series with PoE models support Cisco prestandard PoE and are IEEE 802.3af-compliant.
PoE eliminates the need for wall power to each PoE-enabled device and eliminates the cost for additional electrical cable and circuits that would otherwise be necessary in IP phone and WLAN deployments. PoE switches also eliminate the need for power injectors and PoE midspans for powering IP devices. Table 1 provides a brief description of the new switch.
TheCisco Catalyst 2960 Series with PoE offers the following benefits:
• Supports 15.4W up to 24 ports, allowing transparent connectivity to PoE devices, including Cisco IP phones, Cisco Aironet® wireless LAN access points, as well as any IEEE 802.3af-compliant end device.
• Cisco EnergyWise to measure, report and reduce energy usage across the entire organization.
• Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) version 2 allows the switch to negotiate a more granular power setting when connecting to a Cisco powered device, such as IP phones or access points, than what is provided by IEEE classification.
• PoE MIB provides proactive visibility into power usage and allows you to set different power-level thresholds.
• Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP and LLDP-MED) adds support for IEEE 802.1AB LLDP for interoperability in multivendor networks.
• Network configuration, Cisco IOS® Software updates, and troubleshooting are easy using the embedded device manager and Cisco Network Assistant.
• These switches utilize capabilities rich in Cisco IOS Software, including comprehensive Layer 2 LAN features, intelligent quality of service (QoS), extensive security protection, and network management features.
• Limited lifetime hardware warranty.
• Software updates available at no additional cost.

I have 2 Cisco 6509 core switches, both of which have 2 WS-X6748-SFP blades each, 48 port SFP blades for fiber links etc. My boss decided he wanted to know the temps the core switches are running and the "show environmental temp all" showed these blades are running between 104 and 108 degrees Fahrenheit.
Is this a normal temp for these blades? I have looked around on Cisco's site and can find max operating temps, but nothing showing what temp is normal so to speak for them to run at.
I know load can change the running temps, number of SFP's etc.., but I am trying to find out if these are normal temps. The data center room is kept at 70 degrees.
The answer:80% of the max temperature value you have seen in the cisco site can be expected as normal.
If max operating value is 100deg, then 80deg should be acceptable. There is nothing like universally accepted normal values...... organizations generally decide upon a safer value to bet.
On my monitoring system, a temperature of 37oC (98 degrees F) triggers the high temp threshold and an alarm at 40oC (104 degrees F) is regarded as max temp.
This is just on regular 3750E PoE Cisco 48 port switch, not SFP blades.
Question: I have a network with all fiber switches, the main switch is cisco 4500, Im planning to open a new branch that will be connected with fiber, I will have 6 communications rooms in the new branch. can someone recommend what type of cisco switches POE 24, 48 ports to use, also I plan to keep a cisco fiber switch in the new branch that will connect to all the 6 communications rooms. what is the best cisco model to use.
Answer:3750X, have up to 4 SFP ports
You can stack 2 together to act as 1 switch and that will give you 8 SFP ports to use for fibre connections. The SFP modules are sold separately though, However, if you want to have a separate SFP-only switch, look at the 4500X.
2960G may be your best bet except that is is layer 2. If you don't plan doing any routing on the switch, then that should suffice.
You can call Cisco direct and have a rep recommend something to you from their fleet. The recommendation costs you nothing, It'll be a good guide as they will give you the pros and cons including the bells and whistles, but you'll get the general idea you need in more detail.
One note about the Cisco 2960... the X version is usually cheaper than the S or G versions as Cisco are trying to forcefully migrate people away from older models. This is a bonus for you though, as the X variant is substantially better than previous models.
You could use a the model WS-C3750G-12S-S as a distribution switch and the model 2960S-48FPD-L for the Cisco 48 port switch access layer switches, or the 2960S-48PS-L if you don't want 10G and need to save a few.
I have a fiber SFP port on my switch, and have a single-mode fiber SFP module connected. I would like to graph the db power received on this module, but don't know what OID to take a look at.
Is there s standards-based OID (mib-ii transmission) that I should be able to use, or are all SFP stats typically vendor-specific with their implementation?
The solution:
Depends on the switch and what kind of diagnostics the SFPs provide. You'll have to check your switch MIBs for this.
Check this link out for a Cisco SFP on a 3650/3750( such as WS-C3750V2-24FS-S and WS-C3750V2-24FS-S ), it's got the OIB for receive power sensor, but only for SFP with DOM.

The Cisco IOS is riddled with thousands of commands. This quick reference describes 10 commands will give you a hand when handling various configuration and troubleshooting tasks on Cisco Switch.
10 Basic Cisco IOS Commands, below are the details
1: The “?”
It may seem entirely too obvious that you should know how to type? To ask for help when using the Cisco IOS. However, the Cisco IOS is completely different from other operating systems when it comes to using the question mark (help key). As the IOS is a command-line operating system with thousands of possible commands and parameters, using the? Can save your day.
You can use the command in many ways. First, use it when you don’t know what command to type. For example, type? At the command line for a list of all possible commands. You can also use? When don’t know what a command’s next parameter should be. For example, you might type show ip? If the router requires no other parameters for the command, the router will offer CR as the only option. Finally, use? To see all commands that start with a particular letter. For example, show c? Will return a list of commands that start with the letter c.
2: show running-configuration
The show running-config command shows the router, switch, or firewall’s current configuration. The running-configuration is the config that is in the router’s memory. You change this config when you make changes to the router. Keep in mind that that config is not saved until you do copy running-configuration startup-configuration. This command can be abbreviated sh run.
3: copy running-configuration startup-configuration
This command will save the configuration that is currently being modified (in RAM), also known as the running-configuration, to the nonvolatile RAM (NVRAM). If the power is lost, the NVRAM will preserve this configuration. In other words, if you edit the router’s configuration, don’t use this command and reboot the router–those changes will be lost. This command can be abbreviated copy run start. The copy command can also be used to copy the running or startup configuration from the router to a TFTP server in case something happens to the router.
4: show interface
The show interface command displays the status of the router’s interfaces. Among other things, this output provides the following:
Interface status (up/down)
Protocol status on the interface<
Utilization
Errors
MTU
This command is essential for troubleshooting a router or switch. It can also be used by specifying a certain interface, like shint fa0/0.
5: show ip interface
Even more popular than show interface are show ip interface and show ip interface brief. Theshow ip interface command provides tons of useful information about the configuration and status of the IP protocol and its services, on all interfaces. The show ip interface brief command provides a quick status of the interfaces on the router, including their IP address, Layer 2 status, and Layer 3 status.
6: config terminal, enable, interface, and router
Cisco routers have different modes where only certain things can be shown or certain things can be changed. Being able to move between these modes is critical to successfully configuring the router.
For example, when logging in, you start off at the user mode (where the prompt looks like >). From there, you type enable to move to privileged mode (where the prompt looks like #). In privileged mode, you can show anything but not make changes. Next, type config terminal (orconfig t) to go to global configuration mode (where the prompt looks like router (config)# ). From here, you can change global parameters. To change a parameter on an interface (like the IP address), go to interface configuration mode with the interface command (where the prompt looks like router(config-if)#). Also from the global configuration mode, you can go into router configuration using the router {protocol} command. To exit from a mode, type exit.
7: no shutdown
The no shutdown command enables an interface (brings it up). This command must be used in interface configuration mode. It is useful for new interfaces and for troubleshooting. When you’re having trouble with an interface, you may want to try a shut and no shut. Of course, to bring the interface down, reverse the command and just say shutdown. This command can be abbreviated no shut.
8: show ip route
The show ip route command is used to show the router’s routing table. This is the list of all networks that the router can reach, their metric (the router’s preference for them), and how to get there. This command can be abbreviated shipro and can have parameters after it, likeshiproospf for all OSPF routers. To clear the routing table of all routes, you do clear ip route *. To clear it of just one route, do clear ip route 1.1.1.1 for clearing out that particular network.
9: show version
The show version command gives you the router’s configuration register (essentially, the router’s firmware settings for booting up), the last time the router was booted, the version of the IOS, the name of the IOS file, the model of the router, and the router’s amount of RAM and Flash. This command can be abbreviated shver.
10: debug
The debug command has many options and does not work by itself. It provides detailed debugging output on a certain application, protocol, or service. For example, debug ip route will tell you every time a router is added to or removed from the router.

Please can anyone give me some direction over replacing a juniper router with a Cisco 2911 router.
I am having issues with a cloud partner router and want to bypass this with a cisco.
I need some advise on how to set up ipsec tunnel to the provider and static routes (such as Cisco 2921 router) to point there for hosts desktops. also will this affect NATing of protocols for my voice and data ?

I know for the 3560X series WS-C3750X-48P-S, if I need SFP uplink ports, I need to purchase a module (C3KX-NM-1G). Do I need to purchase these network modules for the 3750X-12S-E, or does it already come with 12 SFP ports? I'm a little confused looking at the datasheet. I am going to have a total of eight 3560X series switches throughout a large facility. All 3560X switches will have a fiber link to the 3750X-12S-E. I see that the C3KX-NM-1G is also for the 3750X-12S-E, which sort of confused me because looking at the data sheet it says it has 12 SFP's. I'm guessing this means it comes with 12 SFP ports and I don't need to purchase a C3KX-NM-1G modules for it right?
The solution:
It comes with the 12 SFP *ports*, but you need to buy the SFP's to load into the ports before you can connect a fibre.
You don't need to use the 3750X WS-C3750X-24S-Snetwork module slot unless:
- You need more 1G ports
- You want 10G uplinks
- You want Netflow or MacSec features.

How to Recover the Cisco WS-C3750V2-24FS-S Default Factory Settings
Do you meet the problem, too? Have tried to reset C2960S-STACK to default factory settings with procedures listed by CISCO, including holding the Mode button longer to go into Express Setup. However, it still intializes flashfs and continues its normal setup. It may be a hardware malfunction, but I just wanted to make sure there was not another solution. Now, some tips for to recover it:
If you just want to clear the settings, do a "show vlan", and then in config mode do a "no vlan xxx" for all vlans listed in the first command (except vlan 1 because it can't be removed). From there, a "write erase" and all configuration will be cleared after a reboot. Or you can contact your previous supplier or contact your sales representative. You can also email to the supplier 3anetwork.com to have a good advice.
